Turning pain into purpose

Omari's journey began with unimaginable loss. His mother died during childbirth as the result of a tragic hospital error. With an absent father, Omari was raised primarily by his grandmother in Chicago, where basketball became a source of structure, opportunity, and direction.

Basketball opened doors that once seemed far beyond his circumstances. Omari became a Division I student-athlete at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He transferred to Mansfield University, where he developed into a Division II All-American, before returning to UNLV to complete his degree. His playing career continued beyond college, including professional opportunities overseas and a tryout with the Philadelphia 76ers.

But some of Omari's most important lessons happened away from the court.

Because of the circumstances surrounding his mother's death, Omari was awarded a trust fund. Learning to navigate that responsibility at a young age sparked a lifelong passion for financial literacy, personal responsibility, and preparing young people for life beyond sports.

Like a lot of young people, Omari had moments where he struggled to find his direction. Athletics gave him an outlet. Mentors gave him perspective. Slowly, he came to understand that the painful parts of his story didn't have to be limitations. They could be fuel.

He learned how to turn his pain into purpose. That realization became the foundation for Passion to Purpose.

Today, Omari travels the country speaking to students, athletes, schools, and youth organizations, challenging young people to identify their gifts, understand their value, build financial and life skills, surround themselves with the right people, and create a real vision for where they're headed.

He speaks to the young person still figuring it out, the athlete searching for an identity beyond the game, and anyone who's ever needed a mentor to change their trajectory, because he was all three.

Omari is an author, speaker, mentor, former professional athlete, husband, and father, raising his two sons, Omari Jr. and Josiah, with his wife Candace in the Washington, D.C. area.

His accomplishments are part of his story. They aren't the point of it. The point is reaching back, and helping the next young person find their way forward. That is Passion to Purpose.
